Treating Acne Should Not Involve Topical Steroids

by Jennifer Gashwin

Topical steroids can easily be said one of the most overly prescribed medicines that have some of the least amount of research put into them. They can by applied in response to a wealth of problems, and they cover diseases and disorders like eczema, acne, dermatitis, rashes, and psoriasis. What needs to first be asked is, how safe are they?

Many times people will consider them safe just because they are prescribed by a wide cohort of doctors, medical professionals, and dermatologists alike. Due to the fact that these steroids can alter the state of the patients skin in little time, doctors within the medication profession readily hand them out.

The greatest active property of topical steroids is that they rapidly absorb into our skin cells. In a nutshell, topical steroids serve to halt the release of numerous inflammation causing chemicals that are normally released when the skin comes into contact with allergens or irritation.

What the effect is if left untreated is that the blood vessels are widened by these inflammation causing chemicals. This leads to swelling and redness. Therefore, by preventing this release within the skin, inflammation is reduced and relief is provided for any previous symptoms such as itchiness. The reason topical steroids should be avoided however, is due to the severe side effects the can produce both internally and on the skin.

HOW IS IT THAT TOPICAL TREATMENTS ARE NOT THE BEST NATURAL AND EFFECTIVE ACNE TREATMENT TO ELIMINATE ACNE INFLAMMATION

The consequences can be grave and can include both internal and external side effects including:

- Raised blood pressure - Diabetes - Increased aggression - Anaphylactic shock - Birth defects - Blood clotting - Cancer - Cardiovascular disease - Depression - Gynecomastia

What happens to the skin as a result of topical steroids is not pretty either. Of the more alarming are:

- Skin thinning (atrophy) and stretch marks (striae) - Easy bruising and tearing of the skin - Perioral dermatitis (rash around the mouth) - Enlarged blood vessels (telangiectasia) - Susceptibility to skin infections - Disguising infection including tinea incognito - The steroid cream giving off strong allergies

The irony is that the original conditions in which the topical steroids are designed to reduce are far less harmful than the side effects they can induce. However, there are other solutions to skin problems such as natural acne treatment cream that avoid all such severe side effects, therefore rendering topical treatments impractical and illogical to recommend.
