by Sara Kitch

Everyone's skin goes through some changes during the colder months of the year. Even oily skin can become dry due to the abrupt changes between the cold weather outside and the air-conditioned inside.

If your skin is sensitive, it might be more susceptible than most.

The biggest problem with sensitive skin is that it doesn't react well to traditional products. If you decide to moisturize or exfoliate more often, you have to find products that are fragrance-free and alcohol-free. Submitting your skin to harsh ingredients can lead to irritation and rashes.

Sensitive Skin Products

Here are a few tips that may help you choose the appropriate skin product for sensitive skin. As I mentioned before, stay away from products that contain alcohol in their first five ingredients. Be especially aware of fragrances and other fillers that can also produce irritation.

You should look for moisturizers that contain colloidal oatmeal. This ingredient is known for its water retaining properties and is also helpful soothing irritated skin. You can find it in many skin care products or in its pure form.

Your skin can benefit from products that contain the least amount of chemical compounds as possible. Luckily, there are several natural products that are specially designed to treat sensitive skin including sensitive skin lotions and sensitive eye creams. If during the colder months you find the need to use different skin care products than those you used during summer, don't be concerned. This is quite common.

Skin Care Tips for Sensitive Skin

Along with using the right skin care products, your sensitive skin treatments should also include a change in some daily habits. During the colder months of the year you must keep in mind two words: gentle and moisturizing.

There are 2 very specific reasons the clothing you choose matters. Wool and acrylic fibers can cause irritation while cold winds can dry out the skin. Cold breezes can be especially harsh on sensitive facial skin and hands. This can be solved by wearing protective garments such as cowl sweaters, scarves and gloves.

Depending on the climate, you may also find it useful to tuck your pants into your boots or wear longer, stocking length socks. This will help protect the skin on your legs from harsh, bitter winds.

Another good idea is to start using a humidifier. The cold weather, in addition to air conditioning and open flame fireplaces, can dry out your skin and the air in your home. Using a humidifier while you sleep will help keep the moisture balance in your skin.

When winter comes around, it very common to change your skin care routine. Moisturizing frequently is important. Exfoliating may need to be reduced to prevent irritation.
