Skin Ulcers

Definition
Skin ulcers are open sores that are often accompanied by the sloughing-off of inflamed tissue. Basically where an area of skin has broken down and you can see the underlying tissue. The most common skin ulcers are venous skin ulcers also called a stasis leg ulcer and Pressure sores also called pressure ulcers, decubitus ulcers, or bedsores.

We must include here sores that will not heal, and abscesses, which are large and also have pus, but do not seem to heal and become open skin ulcers. The swollen part becomes inflamed and tender. There may cause alternate fever and chills.

Causes of Skin Ulcers

There are various causes of skin ulcers. One cause of a skin ulcer is when a cancerous tumor (growth) occurs on, or just below, the skin surface. A skin ulcer caused by a cancerous tumor often has a discharge, may bleed, may become infected, and may cause an unpleasant smell.

Causes include poor living and bad diet; enervation; lack of rest; worry; exhaustion; as well as toxic poisoning. It may also be caused by an infected wound, an illness, lowered resistance, certain drugs, food allergies, stress, or junk foods. Drugs containing sulphur can produce boils.

Venous Skin Ulcers

A venous skin ulcer, also called a stasis leg ulcer, is a shallow wound that develops when the leg veins do not move blood back toward the heart normally (venous insufficiency).

Venous skin ulcers typically develop on either side of the lower leg, above the ankle and below the calf.

What causes venous skin ulcers is: t he veins in the body have valves that keep blood flowing toward the heart. In a condition called venous insufficiency, the valves are damaged and allow some blood to back up in the vein. The slowed circulation causes fluid to seep out of the overfilled veins into surrounding tissues, causing tissue breakdown and ulcers.

Leg ulcers are a special problem; and they are more likely to occur in those with varicose veins. Basically we have here a circulatory problem.

Pressure Ulcers

Most often, pressure ulcers develop on skin over a prominent bone (such as the hip, tailbone, elbows, or heels), especially if the layers of muscle and fat between the bone and the skin are thin. People who develop pressure sores are specially wheelchair users and who has to be on bed permanently.

Some experts believe that more than half of wheelchair users will eventually develop a pressure sore. These wounds are not merely an inconvenience. Pain is one of the most notable side effects of pressure ulcers. Though a pressure sore may take as few as two hours to form, the pain associated with it is often long-lasting. At an early stage, the pressure ulcer will appear as a red patch on the skin. Often it progresses into a deep opening in the skin and then penetrates through muscle and fat down to the bone.

Symptoms vary depending on the stage of the pressure sore
Stage 1: The surface of the skin becomes red.
Stage 2: If pressure continues, a blister or shallow crater forms because the outer layer of skin dies.
Stage 3: Pressure sores penetrate through the deeper layers of skin.
Stage 4: All of the skin is lost, exposing muscle or bone.

Preventing pressure sores is preferable and usually easier than treating them. Many pressure sores and the infections that result from them can be treated effectively. Here are some tips to preventing them:

Take care of yourself by practicing good nutrition. You should eat a variety of food every day, including fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Always take your doctor's advice when it comes to your diet.

Drink lots of fluids during the day.

Keep your skin clean from urine, stool, and perspiration. These materials can irritate the skin.

Check out your skin every day. Keep on the lookout for persistent red spots, especially on pressure points.

Shift your weight every 15 minutes and change your position every hour. Some wheelchair users may want to move to a different chair occasionally. If you can exercise or walk, make sure you do so.

If the ulcer is painful, tell your doctor or nurse if you have pain from the ulcer. Painkillers will usually help.
