Skin Fillers

Skin Filling is a procedure used to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is a cosmetic treatment that basically replenishes your skin with different components like chemicals or some fats extracted from your own body.

Injectable fillers are sometimes used in conjunction with facial surgery procedures; however, injectables alone cannot change facial contours the way surgery can. The results of skin fillers are not permanent, as some of the injected materials can be metabolized by the body.

Fibril: A gelatine powder compound that's mixed with a patient's own blood and is injected to plump up the skin (similar to injectable collagen).

Gortex: is a thread-like material that is implanted beneath the skin to add soft-tissue support.

Botox: This skin filling procedure is a controlled injection of the botulinum toxin which works directly into the muscles to reduce muscle activity. Common places to inject include the horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows, and "crow's feet" around the eyes.

Collagen: Collagen is an injectable filler made from cow protein. Popular places to inject include lines between the eyebrows, lines between the nose and lips (nasolabial folds), lines to the side of the mouth, and lines around the lips.

Fat Injections: Fat taken from your own body is used as a soft tissue filler material. Since it is taken from your own body there is little possibility of an allergic reaction. Fat is taken from areas such as your abdomen, buttocks, or thighs using a small needle attached to a syringe. It is important to remember that fat from your own body will absorb some of the fat and therefore repeated injections of stored fat may be needed for optimal results.

Cymetra : Cymetra is injectable but not as a wrinkle filler. It is a soft tissue filler that consists of micronized skin from cadavers as Alloderm does on a skin graft procedure. Popular places to inject include the lines between the eyebrows, lines between the nose and lips (nasolabial folds), lines to the side of the mouth, and lines around the lips. As with other procedures, this filler may have long-lasting results if used correctly. Unfortunately some patients metabolize or absorb the Cymetra sooner than expected.

RISKS

Collagen: Allergic reaction is its primary risk. To help determine if you are allergic to the substance, your surgeon will perform an allergy skin test about a month before the procedure. After the test is performed, the test site should be watched carefully for three or four weeks, or as long as your surgeon advises. Any sign of redness, itching, swelling, or other occurrences at the test site should be reported to your surgeon.

Fat: Allergic reaction is not a factor for fat because it's harvested from a patient's own body. However, there is still a small risk of infection and other infrequent complications.

Risks not necessarily related to allergies include infection, abscesses, open sores, skin peeling, scarring and lumpiness, which may persist over the treated area. Reports of these problems are very rare.
